This is the fifth book in a series dedicated to life and work of a major social scientist — Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Y.A. Levada. It reproduces the text of the essays «Ot mnenij k ponimaniyu» (From Opinions to Understanding) published in 2000, except for the section «Problema cheloveka» (The Problem of Man), to be published in the sixth book.
The essays are based on extensive data from regular and special surveys conducted by the Pan-Russian Center for Public Opinion.
