‘’Reason and Culture‘’ is the second book by Ernest Gellner (1925−1995) to be published by the Moscow School of Political Studies (the first, ‘’Conditions of Freedom‘’, opened the ‘’Library of the Moscow School of Political Studies‘’ series in 1995). Gellner analyses in detail the vicissitudes of discussions on the essence and meaning of the human mind, which are closely connected with the foundation history of modern Western European culture. Gellner touches upon the central question for modern man — the possibility of adequate representation of oneself, one’s beliefs, one’s language and the world in which he has to live and act.
