In the opinion of the famous French political scientist and School expert Dominique Moisi, the world is governed not by rational ideas and normative principles of universal values, but by the state of self-consciousness, which is determined by three main types of emotions — fear, humiliation and hope. On the conventional emotional map of the world, the zone of fear and identity crisis is the zone of the United States and Western Europe, which are losing their dominant position in the world. On the contrary, the prevalence of hope and belief in a better future in a number of Asian countries has caused their phenomenal growth. The Islamic world’s experience of humiliation and deprivation shapes its hostility to the «cause of troubles» — the West. Russia, with its complex history and the combination of all three types of emotions, is categorized by the author as a «complex case» with an uncertain future. The optimistic and pessimistic scenarios for the future of the global world proposed in the final section of the book focus on the main conclusion: most countries and cultures need to change in order to find hope and overcome fear and humiliation. Maintaining the status quo is the path to disaster.
