The original book by the notable American historian Crane Brinton (1898−1968) is entitled ‘Ideas and Men. A History of Western Thought’. It covers the entire history of the Western world, from ancient Greece to our time. The book was written on the basis of lectures that the historian gave to senior students at Harvard University. For the modern reader, this edition, dedicated to the period from the Renaissance and the Reformation to the middle of the 20th century, is interesting primarily from the standpoint of the author’s analysis of the complex of ideas that have influenced human civilisation.
