A seminar «Sapere Aude: Freedom and Responsibility» in cooperation with the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga in the framework of the Core School programme brought together about 100 representatives of civil society, expert community, journalists, human rights defenders, diplomats, academia from EU, Ukraine, Russia, Central Asia, South Caucasus, Turkey and US to discuss the most pressing issues facing societies today. Lectures, roundtables, and discussions focused on significant challenges of our time, such as the war of aggression in the middle of Europe, the rise of authoritarian regimes worldwide, the anatomy of authoritarianism, the decline of democracy, and, most importantly, what we as civil society can do to counteract violence and propaganda, build solidarity under growing pressure, and recognize the interconnectedness of all processes, major or minor. Participants and experts discussed fundamental problems related to justice and the rule of law, the role of constitutions, and the importance of standing up for the values of freedom, dignity, and human rights.
