This is the first large-scale biography in Russian of the outstanding 20th century English economist who developed the macroeconomic principles of managing capitalist economy known as ‘Keynesianism’. In his doctrine that made a revolution in the ‘classical’ economic theory during the Great Depression (1929−1933), Keynes established quantitative regularities in the ratio of macroeconomic values, principles and permissible limits of state regulation in market processes. Keynes saw economic growth as inseparably connected with the solution of the moral problem — increasing the well-being of the majority of the population.
The biography of Keynes combines the genres of thorough scientific research and a fascinating multidimensional novel, involving about 500 characters. The author devotes considerable space to Keynes’s personal life, the happy years of his marriage to the Russian ballerina Lidia Lopukhova, and the scientist’s ties with Russia.
The first book covers the period of J.M. Keynes’ life from 1883 to 1931, the second — from 1931 to 1946.
