For several decades, the concept of the «liberal world order» offered hope that democratization was inevitable and rules were universal. We became accustomed to believing that history had a vector and progress had an endpoint, but now familiar metaphors have been replaced by a huge question mark. Why are «double standards» not a malfunction of the system, but an integral feature of it — and what can be opposed to them? How does social polarization destroy the very possibility of democratic accountability? At a seminar of the School of Civic Education, held with the financial support of the Swedish Institute, political scientists Alex Yusupov and Mikhail Zabotkin proposed deconstructing the assumptions on which our perception of reality is built.
