As the global world continues its turn away from universal norms toward the politics of deals, the Arctic region is becoming a zone of dangerous opacity. Officials speak of new opportunities created by melting ice, but say little about the degradation of permafrost, which is literally destroying cities and infrastructure. All of this affects people, above all Indigenous peoples. Why is Russia’s climate strategy turning into an anti-climate strategy? Is the Northern Sea Route a global corridor or a logistical dead end? How are the Arctic and the future of artificial intelligence connected? Ilya Shumanov, founder of the Arctida project, and its executive director Nail Farkhatdinov discussed these issues at a seminar of the School of Civic Education.
