Yuri Senokosov

Co-founder of the Moscow School of Political Studies (1992) and the School of Civic Education, director of publications for the School of Civic Education

Yuri is a specialist in the history of philosophy and the philosophy of history. He graduated from the History Department at Moscow State University in 1962 and began working at the magazine «Questions of Philosophy» for the Main Library of Social Sciences of the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences. During the 1980’s he published a series of books under the title «From the History of Russian Philosophical Thought». Yuri Senokosov then started a foundation for philosophical and interdisciplinary research named after the Georgian philosopher Merab Mamardashvili — the philosophical godfather of the School. He has written introductions to several of Mamardashvili’s books, including «How I Understand Philosophy» and «Cartesian Meditations». He also edited and wrote an afterword to «Meditation about Russia and Russians. Features of the Russian National Character».

He is now editor-in-chief of the School’s quarterly journal, «Obshchaya Tetrad» («Herald of Civic Life»).

His most recent books include «Power as a Problem: An Experience of Philosophical Consideration» (2005); «History Teaches. Letters about Civic Education» (2013); «In Search of Lost Universalism. 25 Years of the School’» (2017); «In Search of Lost Universalism. On the School of Civic Education» (2021); and «Thirty Years of Civic Education. Trusting Universalism”(2022).

He is the founder and guiding spirit behind the School’s Berlin Forum, «In Search of Lost Universalism».

The forum provides an opportunity for an open dialogue on ways to rejuvenate the spirit of global civics through focused debates on important global issues. It includes presentations by European and Russian experts, SCE alumni and representatives of the Schools of Political Studies of the Council of Europe.
